The recent economic downturn has forced one of baseball's greatest websites to pursue alternative forms of revenue to stay afloat in 2020. FanGraphs, the excellent online statistical resource, has had to turn to the popular social media platform OnlyFans to draw in more subscribers to their site.
David Appelman, the founder and owner of FanGraphs, had this to say about the move:
"For years we have been operating as a free site, with no paywall, but now our advertisements aren't enough to keep us in business. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent delay of the 2020 MLB season, we have been forced to shift from an ad-driven business model to a subscriber-driven model, and have seen decreases in both traffic and advertising revenue."
"To address this, we are partnering with the popular sex worker platform OnlyFans, to deliver a special subscription service centering around what we like to call "sexy stats." The real hot stuff, like barrel percentage (winks) and xxxwOBA that really gets your motor running. It'll all be available through an exclusive premium membership on our site," said Appelman.
"And that's not all," Appelman went on to say. "We are toying with the idea of analysis after dark, and Jay Jaffe might even podcast with his shirt off. Who knows? It's gonna get real wild up in here."
The OnlyFanGraphs subscription is set to be priced at $15 a month, however the site is already experimenting with the idea of private statistical analysis shows for its most dedicated donors.
"We are very excited to get this thing off the ground," Appelman said, while slipping a lacy Joe West mask onto his face.
(EDITOR'S NOTE: Please, please, please donate and/or subscribe to FanGraphs. Much of the baseball research we do wouldn't be possible without them, and they make baseball analysis accessible for a great number of people.)
